Most “sustainable shopping” guides assume you have a car. Or at least that you don’t mind an inconvenient rideshare. This one doesn’t. Every shop on this list is within two blocks of a bus stop, BART station, or Caltrain platform — mapped specifically so you can load your bag and get home on the same trip you were doing anyway.
The selection criteria: bulk dry goods, at minimum. A liquid refill station (soap, oil, vinegar) earns extra weight. Cleaning supplies refill earns the most. We went twice to each one — once on a weekday and once on a weekend. Hours differ; this list reflects confirmed 2026 schedules.
01 · Rainbow Grocery Co-op
Mission, San Francisco · 4 blocks from 16th St BART
Worker-owned, no meat, no corporate accounts. The bulk aisle runs oils, grains, vinegar, cleaning supplies, personal care. The prices are honest and the staff are opinionated in a useful way.
The Mission BART exit drops you four blocks away. Go on a weekday morning. The weekend checkout line is 15 minutes minimum, and the bulk section gets chaotic by noon Saturday.

02 · Bare Market
Hayes Valley, San Francisco · 2 blocks from Van Ness Muni
The smallest footprint shop on the list. Bring your clean glass jars; they’ll fill them. Cashierless checkout, no bags offered — and this is a feature, not an oversight.
The focus is household: dish soap, laundry, personal care, some pantry staples. It doesn’t try to be everything, which means what it does is done well. Open Tuesday through Sunday; closed Mondays.
03 · Ecology Center Farmers Market
North Berkeley · 1 block from Downtown Berkeley BART
Sunday market, BART exit to Oxford. The refill pop-up near the south entrance runs biweekly — call ahead to confirm dates, as it’s volunteer-operated and schedule-dependent.
When it’s running: cleaning supplies, bulk grains, some personal care. The surrounding market is worth the trip regardless. Arrive before 11am for the best selection and shorter lines.
04 · Sustain + Preserve
Rockridge, Oakland · 3 blocks from the 51B bus
Three blocks from the 51B. Excellent local selection, decent cleaning aisle. The fermentation section is a bonus — if you’re into kombucha brewing or lacto-fermentation, the supplies here are the best curated set we’ve found.
Check their Instagram before visiting on Sundays; they occasionally run low on cleaning supplies and post updates same-day.
05 · Local Take
Inner Sunset, San Francisco · 1 block from N Judah
One block from the N Judah stop at 9th and Irving. Small shop, focused range. The olive oil is local; the dish soap is the best we’ve found anywhere — a French castile that costs less than the Whole Foods version and refills for $0.60/oz.
A final note: all of these shops appreciate you bringing clean containers. Rinse your jars. Let them dry. Show up on a Tuesday. The weekend crush at Rainbow in particular is real — the Monday morning quiet is a different experience entirely.
